FAQs

Company Commitment:

Being a member of our company involves mandatory weekly company class and rehearsals. Rehearsal days and times this year are TBC. Additional rehearsals may be added closer to show dates as needed.

Attending at least one additional class a week is highly recommended for company dancers. If none of the class times work for you, please let us know and we will work with you to come to an agreement.

Throughout the school year, the company learns ~2-3 large group pieces in the style of classical and contemporary ballet, with opportunities to dance on pointe as well. There will be various performance opportunities, including UBC Ballet’s showcase entitled NOCTURNE, other dance club shows, and events around UBC and the greater Vancouver community. Additionally, we host one photoshoot for company and executive dancers per term.

Is there a financial cost to joining Company?

Company members have to pay an additional company fee of $45, which covers the cost of costumes for the year.

Do I have to be a member in order to join?

Yes, as per AMS policies, company dancers must be active members of the club for the duration that they are in the company. However, memberships can be purchased upon acceptance and is not needed for the audition.

What if I am unable to make some rehearsals?

Extenuating circumstances, such as illness, conflicting exams, etc. are excused. However, we ask that you catch up on any new choreography before the next rehearsal. If you miss more than 2 rehearsals without such circumstances, choreographers reserve the right to remove your place in group pieces.

What is the company performance schedule this year?

The performance schedule is currently tentative, although dancers can expect to have at least one performance at the end of each semester, typically the weekend before finals. Participation in these shows are required unless extenuating circumstances occur. Planning accordingly for finals, assignments, and projects is the responsibility of each dancer.

This year, we will be hosting our own showcase entitled NOCTURNE at the end of term 1.

How will I be held accountable for attending rehearsals and classes?

All company dancers will be required to sign an agreement upon acceptance, indicating your understanding of these policies.
